

If you choose to use a 1903A3 action I would by all means use a 1903 trigger guard and floorplate as it is made of milled steel. They aren't laying everywhere but they are by no means rare either. Some of the 1903A3 rifles made by Remington and Smith Corona are finished fairly well but for me if a person is spending the money on a custom rifle I would look for a 1903.

Alpine and Penney did not use National Ordnance, they stayed with the established resources companies Penney had used since the beginning of National Ordnance. From 1,275,766 to almost 1,600,00 are the Nickel steel ones and they are also very strong. 30/06 ammunition in M1 Garands, 1903s, and 1903A3s that is loaded beyond 50,000 CUP and has a bullet weight more than 172-174gr. The ones made from 800,000 to 1,275,766 are the double heat treated ones and are my favorites.

If it were me I would look for a Springfield Armory action with a serial number above 800,000. As someone mentioned above the National Ordinance receivers were made in order to assemble rifles from available Springfield surplus parts.
